BOXING DAY RACE & THE CHRISTMAS SERIES

What an unexpected pleasure the Christmas Series has turned out to be considering the inauspicious start with just four boats competing in windy, wet conditions, then moving on to races (YES ! not just one but two races with 26 boats - What? In the middle of winter? YES) some (well one!) enjoying glorious sunshine ! And on top of all that the competition has been great. Looking at the forecast for New Years Day, the last race in the series, it looks doubtful if there will be a race. In which case the winner will have been decided by just one point. If on the other hand, the forecast turns out to be wrong, which it has been so often in this series, then any one of four boats could win ! Exciting stuff. Well done to all concerned and to all those competing - there were many individual performances of merit further down the fleet.

The Boxing Day Race
Race Officer: Vice Commodore: Jonathan Atkinson (Hat & Specs)
Assistant Race Officer: Rear Commodore Sailing: Mike Hartley (No hat or specs)

Boxing Day Race: 2 minutes to go

Boxing Day Race - Easterly winds prevailing

Boxing Day Race - Keiron Inman and Paul Jenkins in contention to win the Christmas Series.

Well done Patrick Bromilow (Laser Radial) winner of the Boxing Day Race.

Sailing is an absolutely fascinating sport. To get there one has to be determined, persistent yet patient and inquisitive. All of that in bucket loads. But get to a certain point, and who knows when or what that is, and an unlimited opportunity for enjoyment and discovery awaits the lucky sailor. From first steps on West Kirby Marine Lake, to sailing across the Atlantic, competing in World Championships, sailing in wonderful places. Not limited by age or infirmity but only by a lack of determination…. this sport has a lot going for it !

2026 WKSC Handbook, 2026 Sailing Programme, Race Officer Duty

Another year, another season beckons.  What is in store for any of us? The answer of course lies in the WKSC 2026 Sailing Programme contained in the WKSC Handbook. In January I will explore some of the offerings with you. Naturally, there are many choices. Reality will be determined by weather. The range of conditions in which you are capable of sailing will be determined, to some extent, on how much time you put in on the water. That determination factor requires eyes open to many facets of sailing. Being Race Office (RO) or assisting the Race (ARO) might appear to many, on first thought, to be a chore, a club required duty. Yet, like many unexpected things in sailing, it provides another view to the sport which improves ones own sailing and which can provide pleasure to many of your fellow sailors.

The period for choosing a date for your Race Officer duty closes on 5th January. The process moves on after that, to allocating duties on a random basis, by a group of seniors in the club.
