A View from the Bridge

Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you all had a great Christmas and Festive period.

What a great start we had to 2026! New Year was an absolute blast, the Club was packed with people from 1 to 90 years old. Music and Karaoke (cheers Matt!)! A great night was had by all.

The sailing has already kicked off with sturdy turn outs (26 boats, I believe, on the New Year's race). Remember, the sea temperature keeps going down until March, so wrap up warm.

Thanks to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make 2025 a great year, if you think that that could be you helping out with the Club, in any areas, let me know or find the Senior Officer who is in charge of the area you wish to get involved with and we can help you with the introductions.

The AGM is coming up in 3 weeks, Thursday 29th January. All members are welcome to attend.

Onwards and upwards, see you on the water!

Chris.

Last weeks newsletter was on New Years Eve so it seems appropriate for this Newsletter, the first of 2026 to say HAPPY NEW YEAR! Lets hope for lots of great sailing days. When I was writing Sailing Matters last week, the forecast for the New Years Day Race was not good and that turned out to be accurate but there was a good turn out for the prize giving on New Years Day for the Frostbite Series and the Christmas Series. Well done to Keiron Inman and Paul Jenkins (GP) and to Steve Ferrington (Solo) respectively winners of the two series. The Frostbite Series attracted 35 x boats and the Christmas Series 34 x boats. maximum turnout on two of the days was 26 boats. Good stuff!

Keiron Inman and Paul Jenkins being presented with their prizes by the President for winning the Frostbite Series.

The WKSC handbook provides the Sailing Programme for the year February to January. We run out of sailing programme at the end of January until the new Handbook arrives (for those who rely solely on the handbook) but of course the new Sailing Programme for 2026 has been determined. The sailing programme for February and March will be published on the website and newsletter. About half of the RO slots for the 2026 season were filled voluntarily (thanks to all those who volunteered their preferred dates) and the rest have been allocated. All will revealed in the 2026 Handbook. If you havent volunteered a date(s) there are still a few days left - closes on 10/1/26. The handbook goes off to the printers circa 14/2/26 and we will have them ready for distribution to members 7-14/3/26. Assistant Race Officers (ARO) duty will be allocated but will not appear in the handbook.  Being an ARO will help you to understand the RO process. Being an RO and ARO brings a different perspective to racing. It contributes to the knowledge and experience of a good racer ! Ill return to the subject of the handbook in a future newsletter; theres been an interesting debate about it in the last couple of years.

I rolled up to watch the first two races of the Arctic Series last Sunday in full admiration of all those who set out to compete. It was cold and breezy with a big black cloud dead up wind threatening something unpleasant! But none of that was going to deter the eight boat fleet which consisted of experienced sailors, novice and junior sailors. The black cloud brought a squall; rain, hail and a gusty increase in wind to over 20 kts. Competitors faced planing back down the lake before rounding up near the jetties. There were plenty of capsizes; the rescue boat was kept busy. Tony Clark sailing his Laser was the only finisher in the first race and the only starter in the second !!! Character building conditions - that's what is was!

It was alright at the start of last Sundays first race.

Do you remember the poll that was connected to last weeks newsletter.? To complete the poll you had to log on to the club website. 36 x people succeeded in logging on and completing the pole. Thank you for having a go . Results = 32 x sailed and raced at WKSC in 2025, 35 x intend to sail at WKSC in 2026, 32 own a boat, 4 x didnt sail/race at WKSC in 2025, 1  x doesnt intend to sail at WKSC in 2026 and 2 x dont intend to race.  Ill try another pole in the season when, hopefully, theres more on the website to attract folk to log on.

Thats it for this week.
