Belgian Waffle.. Having returned late last week, I was delighted to attend the naming ceremony, at WKSC, of the new West Kirby Lifeboat. Excellent afternoon, followed by Dee Sailing Club kindred clubs cocktail party, equally as good. Whilst the tidal classes and dinghies continue with their Autumn series, my next assignment is being RO with Mal Jones for the Handicap Dinghy Open Meeting, (including falcons), to be held on the tide on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th October. The weather has been unkind to our racing this year, which makes me quietly optimistic that during that weekend we will have great sailing conditions. The midday tides are ideal, and we'll revert with sailing instructions in the week prior to the event. I am particularly keen to see all of you who started racing this year under the watchful eye of Tony Marston and we'll ensure there will be ample rescue cover. I just learned of a new little race between 2 Falcons on the lake for just 24 hours. Mike Hartley and Jamie Marston are on the hunt for helms and crews, but what a marvellous and exiting race to get involved with. I am happy to sail whenever, but I hasten to add that my vision is not great in daylight, at night I am unpredictable. Just a friendly warning to my competitors!! Safe sailing everyone. Jean-Louis |

Falcon 24 Hour challenge This weekend, starting 10.30 am Saturday... finish 10.30 am Sunday. Jamie Marston has challenged Mike Hartley to a 24 hour Falcon race on the lake. We need sailors of all ages and abilities to take part. Whilst chilly, the forecast is good. Fancy sailing at night... we need you all. Please text Mike Hartley 07704458308 to organise your slot. Not really fair on Jamie, but hay ho… Team Racing this weekend Manchester and Liverpool University students are now back and the team racing season starts this weekend with their Fresher Trials. Please make them welcome. Team and Match Racing Committee Regional Youth & Junior Team Racing Event at Ripon SC 21/22 September The WKSC Junior Team taken on the North. On the 21st and 22nd October, Ripon Sailing Club held the 3rd NEYYSA North Region Youth and Junior Team Racing event. Like most of the junior events, this is a pairs event or two boat team racing. Essentially the rule is simple, whichever team has a boat in last place loses. There were 21 teams from all over the North entered including our team from West Kirby. The club were represented by Poppy Armstrong, Edie Rogers, Isobel Sandow and Sophie Gatenby. Isla Armstrong was also at the event as she was asked to sail with a team from Elton, who could not quite believe their luck! On Saturday morning the wind was a very light, very shifty, force 1 3, which made the racing quite tricky. The team also had a really tough draw which (potentially unfairly) had them sailing against all the good teams. West Kirby put on a great show and were the only team to beat the eventual winners Top Hats, who have won the event 2 times before. They also narrowly lost to Windemere A who had won all their races with a 1,2. Despite a couple of losses they had done enough to make the Gold League, but more importantly they were the team that were making the headlines. Everyone, including competitors, parents and race officials were discussing the fantastic racing they had or had seen with our team!! On Sunday morning there was a bit more breeze and it was in a more consistent direction. The team were quick in these conditions and started well with 3 straight wins. The big one was against Windemere A, which cost Jon Rogers £40 in a wager he made the girls the previous day. The potential to win the event was there, and nobody on the shore was going to bet against our girls. However, despite really close racing and fantastic conversions all the way through the race, the team made a couple heat of the battle decisions that didn't work out in their favour, and led to losses against the Top Hats, Derwent and Rutland, all of which happened within the last 20 yards of the finish line (Note: My heart has only just about stopped racing). At the end of the Gold Fleet round-robin the team had won 3 and lost 3, which left them 3rd overall after count back, a fantastic result! I really think the girls can hold their heads up high. They were true ambassadors and really made an impression on everyone on and off the water. Their boat handling was fantastic, and both boat crews showed great ability to pass back and convert from losing or dangerous combinations into winning combinations. In addition, Isobel was recognised for good sportsmanship, for being polite and courteous to Umpires and ROs, and for always saying thank-you to the Finish Boat. A great weekend had by all, although as the coach for the weekend I may need to sit in a darkened room for the rest of this week. Angus Armstrong. |
