Belgian Waffle..

Hello, ici le Waffleur.

And I did some waffling at the weekend, with our celebration of all our volunteers and our sailing achievers during this past season. I made a not so illustrious speech (the waffling) recognising and thanking all our members who have volunteered some of their time to run this club of ours. We never have too many volunteers and if you feel you can help, simply get in touch. We'll find something for you to do!! I then handed over to Tony Marston, (who did make an illustrious speech!!), telling all those present the magnificent achievement of Dan Skinner and his team mates at the International Canoe World Championship. Dan was part of a 3 man British team successfully defending a challenge from Germany this year.  They won the New York Canoe Club Challenge Trophy, the second oldest sailing trophy dating back to 1886. The cup was on show in the main room, as well as the Lough Erne Trophy won by Steve Fleming, for finishing 1st at the One design International Canoe Nationals.

I would earnestly recommend for those two to offer their services to Sir Ben, the latter of course trying to win the oldest sailing trophy in Barcelona. Come on guys, you brought one each home already, go get the other one!!

The Hilbre and Star classes have brought their boats into the boatshed for their winter maintenance. The MPB is also full of various boats under repair, and I know there are a number of dinghies and falcons also hoping for some dry storage to work on their boats. I can't help but feel more boats could benefit from the boatsheds, if, for example, a boat owner would be given the choice to go into the boatshed for a limited period of time, then back out again, especially those with little maintenance necessary. It would create much needed space for those requiring winter maintenance and currently with no where to go. Too many boats, particularly dinghies and falcons have to go in the sheds for maintenance during the summer months when they should be out sailing and racing.

Lastly, we are running the Coastal Championship this weekend, hoping to welcome a few visitors and a great number of our home fleet of dinghies and falcons. The SIs are on the website. We only need a bit of luck with the wind now and we'll have great racing.

See you on the water.

Sailing News

Etchells European Championships

WKSCs David Bromilow took part in the Etchells European Championships at the Royal Yacht Squadron last weekend, his team came away as Etchells Youth European Champions, coming 1st youth team, 2nd Corinthians and 7th overall. They sailed 2 days out of the 3, with the last day AP/A due to lack of wind. They sailed Pulse, which isn't their usual boat (Ziggy) as a USA team had chartered it.

David and his team took part in the Etchells Youth Academy last winter, which is a keelboat programme based at the Royal London Yacht Club in Cowes. They were selected to take part in 5 training weekends which culminated in a trials weekend, whereby the top ranked boats were awarded an Etchell to campaign for the Cowes Etchells series for the season. The season finished with the European Championships last weekend.

With the Etchells Fleet being made up of a significant number of professional crews, David and his team have really enjoyed the experience and gained a great deal being part of the fleet in Cowes.
