News & Notices

Prize Giving

The Prize Giving took place on Saturday. It was a fabulous night, well attended by all.

With the absence of the Commodore, as he was travelling in his native lands, the mantle was taken up by the Rear Commodore Sailing and the President.

The night went well, with a new format of the Class Captains awarding prizes tailored to their Fleets. There were hoodies to salvers and lighthouses to beer tokens awarded to our successful sailors!

Prize winners too numerous to enter here. But very well done all!

I must make a special mention to those who won their own challenges this year, even if you didn't get your name engraved on anything. These challenges might be just to race 6 times, sail on the tide for your first time or beat X to the windward mark. These are the little wins which make us love our favourite (and amazingly eco-friendly) sport of aquatic-wind-harnessing. Keep setting your personal goals and keep winning your own personal races!

Lots of hard work was clearly evident from our Sailing Sec Mike Hartley and his amazing team of Volunteers, again too numerous to mention, but you know who you are.

Thank you all for making it a great fun evening!

Chris Gatenby

Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance Sunday was very well attended this year. The Police estimated there were 3000 people up on Grange Hill. Rear Commodore Jonathan Atkinson laid a wreath on behalf of the Club.

It was good to see so many Members there. After the March Past, members welcomed Veterans and the Lifeboat Crew back to the Club House for food and hot toddies.

Many thanks to Helen Brown for sorting out the fabulous spread.

New members and teams are most welcome, just turn up. This is a lovely evening to come and enjoy the social side of the Club.

Snooker

As the days draw in and sailing opportunities reduce, the club offers alternative ways to while away the dark evenings. The snooker table has been moved upstairs to the Wilson Room where the game can be played in splendid isolation!

All members are of course welcome to play at any time (20ps are required for the light meter).

We play snooker matches, home & away, against kindred clubs Hoylake, Wallasey and Dee plus billiards against Hoylake.... Additional fixtures are being contemplated. Last year we enjoyed an unbeaten season which was very rare and extremely satisfying. Some of the trophies date back almost 100 years.

Practice takes place on Thursday evenings from 7.30 and, again, all members are welcome to come along. It is informal, with plenty of chat and the occasional drink and whilst some are better than others, keen foursomes matches ensue, in a light hearted manner….its even better if you draw a good player!

Please just let us know if you want to come along and/or we can add you to the WKSC Snooker WhatsApp group for news and updates etc.
