Belgian Waffle... As Acting Commodore of our Club, I looked at the events planned for the next few months. I have reluctantly taken the decision to abandon the away Ball in the Isle of Man. There just does not seem to be the interest we once thought there would be. The Club will not put any other functions on that Saturday. If you have bookings in place, you may elect to keep your booking and enjoy what the beautiful Isle of Man has to offer or choose to cancel. I understand that there is a wedding planned in that hotel on the Saturday 12th of October. Another not so positive note, is the cancellation of the dinner planned after the WKSC Regatta at the Menai Straits on the 14th of August. We have been given a start time for racing at 14.00 (Low water at 12.40). The racing usually takes about 3 hours and possibly longer if we are hampered by light airs. Then, results and prize giving… It just seems to be a bit of a rush, before moving everyone to Chateau Rhianfa in time for dinner. This is supposed to be a leisurely stroll to the bar, not a sprint and my days of competing with Mr Bolt were never very successful to start with, now well and truly over. On a more positive note, and as luck would have it, the Royal Anglesey Yacht Club had planned to have live music that evening. We will add some food and a little refreshment, and I am sure it will turn out to be a memorable evening. Still on the subject of the Menai Straits, I am told that the organisers have plans to clear the slipway by the lifeboat station. I know…. I heard this too over the past years, but a digger was spotted clearing some of the sand away. I was not told exactly what he did with the sand, but fingers crossed the launch and recovery will be a little easier. The Commodores Cruise to Hoyle Bank is scheduled for this Saturday. The weather forecast is changing daily, and I will make a call at 12.00 on Friday whether we go ahead, or not. The main event in our racing calendar is the WKSC Regatta. This year, our Sailing Secretary has planned 4 days of racing starting on Thursday 4th of July. The Illusions will race on Friday 28th of June on the lake, thus allowing them to participate in the Regatta a week later in different boats. The details of what is on offer, sailing and socials, are on our website as well as an easy way to enter and book tickets for you, your crew and family members. It takes a couple of seconds for the system to call up your details, but please be patient, as pre-booking will make life a lot easier for the Race Officers and those organising the catering. Summer Party and Tug of War The annual Tug of War this year was again successfully defended by West Kirby Lifeboat. My personal feelings were set aside, and strict neutrality was the order of the day, as the two teams set ready to battle! To the sound of roaring crowds and swooning spectators the teams lined up ready for the annual duel! As the two teams of athletes stared each other down, the tension was palpable. After an Olympic struggle to be proud of, West Kirby Lifeboat team convincingly beat the Sailing Club All Stars 3 — 0. Fair to say, the final scoreline did not reflect the tension of the pulls. The children of the Club fared better against the Lifeboat winning outright! After the match between the titanic teams, beer and burgers were consumed in quantities which matched the sporting struggle. Next year West Kirby Sailing Club intend to introduce a strict training regimen (and ringers) to beat the Lifeboat. Swiss Chris Vice Commodore |

Solo Open On Saturday we held the Solo Open. To read a great article about the event please click here. Hoylake Regatta Over the weekend, on Saturday, Hoylake Sailing Club hosted their Regatta. Two Falcons, Eddy and Hawk, met on the Hoylake slip preparing to do battle in breezy conditions. The sun came out, wind became a light but fickle affair, however, the sailing was superb. Hawk held the advantage for her to go on and win Tom Grenfell silver falcon. Again the team at Hoylake hosted a fantastic Regatta, both on and off the water, and we look forward to hosting their Operas at our forthcoming Regatta. |

On Saturday with the sun shining the Club hosted a very successful RYA Discover Sailing Event. It was a busy day with the BBQ, RNLI tug of war & Solo Open Event which meant the potential new members got to see both the sailing & social side of the Club. After a tour of the Club, there was an opportunity for a sail on the lake, concluding with a relaxing drink in the sun before departing with lots of information about the Club including membership & courses. Thank you to everyone who helped, to make it so successful. Our fantastic training team are providing summer sailing courses.
