A View from the Bridge |
As the summer begins, I'd like to start by saying good luck to the WKSC sailors and Crew representing Great Britain at the 420 Junior European Championships this week in Porto. Tom, Pat, Olivia, Adela, Isobel and Edie, we all hope you have fair winds and following seas! The Falcons were off to an early start at the Menai Straits with the Falcon Nationals being held over the weekend, with our very own Rear Commodores Mike and John fighting for 1st and 2nd place overall respectively! Well done all! For those that are remaining in Beaumaris, I hope you have some great sailing and good socials. Do they still do a 2.5 pint tankard of Tennants at the George and Dragon? (Memories of an emotional night!). The International Canoes have been busy in Brixham, still awaiting results there, I'm sure Tony will give you an update next week! Good luck folks! The Lightning open was held on the Lake too, I have to be honest, I've been busy working, so I haven't got a clue who won there. I am sure there will be a report next week. Can I just give a polite reminder that we are on a water meter and the country is about to go into a hosepipe ban, when you bring your boats off the Lake please just wash down the bits that really need a wash, blocks, sails and not much else! Repeated washing of fibreglass just wastes water. We can all do our little bit to help the environment and save water. Looking ahead we have the Ceilidh on Sunday 21st September - after the Sailing - there will be food by Paul and Helen, included in the ticket prices, get your tickets at the Bar. Same group as last year, they have a caller to help sort out the 2 Left Foot Brigade, so join us for a hilarious afternoon! The next one for the Diary is the Annual Ball. This year is the Home Ball, so easy to stagger home from. Saturday 4th October, food, drinks and a spot of dancing. A good excuse to dust off your poshest frocks and slickest Black Tie! Food by the excellent Cheeky Chilli. Drinks from all over the world! See you there! Chris |

Thursday Night Winter Talks We are planning for the winter already! The Thursday Talks we held last year were a great success. We have a few people signed up to do some fantastic and interesting new talks. If anyone has an interesting topic they would like to present we would love to hear from you. Please email - house@wksc.org.uk Lost Property Can people please check lost property and retrieve any of their belongings. Thank you. Menai Straits Regatta - Beaumaris Town Round Puffin Island Regatta On Monday at the Beaumaris Town Round Puffin Island Regatta WKSC the winning gun was sounded for some familiar and surprising names from WKSC.Jean Louis Simons (in GPs) and John Burthem in Hawk (Falcon 46) were not great surprises. However WKSC members also took the winning gun in the two RAYC tidal classes. Martin Hartley has led the Fife fleet many times before in Sian II and his sail number 1 featured as first again. In the day's most surprising result John Dowler abandoned his taxi clients - two 90+ year olds (his mother Vi and Marjorie Egerton) in the Bulkeley!! He stepped on board Menai Straits One Design (MS number 17 - Playmate) at about 12.30. Using his limited knowledge of his one previous experience of crewing in an MS, he and his fellow Star owner (Jenny Walker) scrambled to get the boat ready arriving at the line with 2 minutes to spare. Following a run down to and through Puffin Sound Playmate took the lead during a short beat to round Puffin to Starboard. In a close finish Playmate eventually crossed the line as first boat from the whole fleet home from Puffin!! It was a significant surprise to the MS fleet but it was much appreciated by Playmate's owner and RAYC boatman Guy Williams as a close second was his Dad sailing MS6 !
