Thanks to everyone who came along to listen to my talk on Piloting last Thursday, I hope it was interesting and I think we had a good laugh. Hopefully now some of you will realise why sometimes I come into the club a little bit quiet/shell shocked/apprehensive. The job can take up significant amounts of grey matter - a problem as I only have a limited amount of the aforementioned! Thanks again to everyone who paid the Lake Licences, without too much fuss. Kay, Jill and the gang were so pleased that so many came forward. This money, and some more, £19 000 in total, has been sent to the Council. This money covers your boats (those that paid) and the Club's Training Boats. Next year you will just pay to the Club and we will sort out the rest. That said, we are still in negotiations for how this is going to move forward. Jonathan Atkinson and his Team are working hard behind the scenes to ensure that the Club's needs and requirements are put forward. If you see any of them, buy them a pint as it is very hard work they are doing on your behalf! Whilst I'm on the subject of the Lake, there is a missing plank on the Seaward Jetty. Please be careful. We will aim to get it repaired ASAP. Fireworks next weekend, Tom Price and Peter Williams are heading up the vast group of volunteers who are coming to help run the event. Many thanks to everyone who has come forward to assist in Stewarding, Fireworks, House and general Dogs bodying! If you think you can help contact any of the above or Jill or Ben and they will forward your name. Finally, as some of you may know I am the Chair of the North West Port Welfare Committee. We serve all the Ports from Holyhead, to Silloth (including the Isle of Man). Each year, headed by the Liverpool Seafarers Centre, we have a drive to get Christmas presents for the 750, or so, Sailors who visit Ports in our region. If anyone has any old unwanted presents or anything they would like to give, it would be most welcome. The other things we are looking out for, is Men's winter coats and also old luggage (even if the wheels are broken) - (please put any lock codes or keys inside the cases). If you can donate, can you please bring items to the Club and I will arrange for them to be taken to the Seafarers Centre. We will hopefully do this each year, so bear it in mind for your spring clear-out! Chris |

Yard Clean - 1st November at 10.30 - Can you help? We need to clear the yard from all rubbish and weeds growing. If you can come with a shovel that would help. We also seem to have a large amount of trolleys and road base trailers just always getting in the way. I intend to photograph them and moving them to the bank out of the way. If you have a trailer in the yard and do not wish for it to be buried, then collect it before Saturday. Lastly, anyone know who this topper belongs to? Answers back to me please. To finish on a positive news, our Rear Commodore Sailing has arranged for hot food to be available once the work is done. Hope to see many of you there; sense of humour essential, shovels desirable, moaning not acceptable! All the best Jean-Louis. Last Saturday was our annual Halloween Party. This year the Boatshed turned out to be a Government lab gone wrong with zombies running amok! It was a fun night for over fifty of our juniors and a few of their friends. A huge thank you to the House Team and volunteers who delivered a great night, from delicious food to fantastic games, and scary Boatshed tours. Blown off again - last weekend ! The easier winds were mid week. Liz Potter got out for a sail but that wasn't quite as easy as she would have liked…Shes written up the experience for our edification ! (see below). INTRODUCTION TO RACING GROUP Mike De St Paer discussing airflow with the Introduction to Racing Group THE WKSC MIRROR PROJECT - Thurday evening working group Thanks to Derek L., Neill G., Mike C. and Sheena D. Mirror Project Thursday evening shed work - with distractions ! COMING UP... ADVENTURES ON THE ESTUARY by Liz Potter In the absence of much racing news this week, let me tell you a tale of the unexpected when I went for a sail on the tide in my DZero Zippy last Friday. The wind had been howling all week, so I was keen to get out on the tide on the only day that wasnt blowing over 20 knots. It was sunny and moderate winds from the west. I met Chris Gatenby and the lifeboat crew before I launched and we discussed my sailing plan, which was to head towards Dee SC with the incoming tide and return after about an hour. I showed him my PLB1 safety beacon which I carry in my life jacket pocket. The launching was a bit bumpy in the waves which had built up in the previous days storms, but it was a lovely reach in the sunshine and Zippy was humming a happy tune. After ten minutes, I noticed a huge mushroom shaped cloud on the Welsh shore over Mostyn. Hum, I thought. That looks wet and might be very squally. Plan A would have been to dash back home, but the waves crashing onto the concrete slip were not enticing, especially if Mushroom produced 30 knots of wind to help me onto the lee shore. Plan B was to outrun the Mushroom and let it pass behind me. I sheeted in and started to surf the waves to get out of its way. By the time I passed Dee SC, Mushroom had doubled in size and had landed on the sea, still heading my way. I looked at the rocky shore and decided to create Plan C. This was to bolt for Sheldrakes, where I could land in the reeds/mud and get out and face the beast if needed. The wind was still steady as I entered the Shelldrakes channel. Wherever I went, my wind indicator pointed at Mushroom. It was coming for me! Once I had passed the moored boats, the channel became very narrow, so I fired up Plan D. This was to get out of the nook Id got into and brazen my way through Mushroom towards sunny West Kirby on the horizon. I turned around, quite a skill in the narrow channel, and disturbed a flock of 100 shell duck on the seaward marsh, who arose, screeching at me and the approaching storm. No sooner had I turned, the wind shifted to the North West, meaning I had to tack out of the small channel against the tide whilst dodging the moored boats. At least it took my mind off the Mushroom. When I looked up again, I was in it. The temperature dropped to about 6 degrees and a few spots of drizzle fell on me. The wind stayed a steady 10 knots from the North and the sky turned a foggy orange. After a few minutes, the sun came out, the wind reverted to Westerly and I escaped on my way home. It was a very strange experience and it was good to have a safety beacon, someone who knew where Id gone plus a collection of emergency plans. What I didnt know was that Ben Shoebridge had seen me go out and was running a safety course at the club. He had prepared a RIB and had clocked the Mushroom and its mates further out over Point of Ayr. He was pleased to see me round the corner off Caldy on my way home and stood down the emergency service. A heartfelt thank you Ben, it could have turned out otherwise. Thursday Talks and Tunes - First Music Night - Tomorrow Everyone is welcome. Just turn up on the night, grab a drink, take a seat and enjoy the evening. Following the success of Thursday Talks last winter we're back with a bang (literally)! We've introduced music to the mix. Music Night is experimental - so if you play an instrument bring it down, you can play on your own or with friends, or just see who's in the room that knows whatever you're playing. You can sing too and join in. Or simply enjoy the live music with a drink and friends. Sea Shanties is a bit of fun with raucous singing (or shouting!) and a trip down memory lane. Don't worry if you don't know the words; our shantyman (Ben) will sing a line, and everyone else will (hopefully) respond in unison. Talks - Come down and learn more about your fellow members; with Topics from our English Language to Outer space! Keep an eye out for the posters telling you what is on each month.
