Belgian Waffle.. Belgian waffles, still Waffling from overseas. The Dart 18 World Championship came to a close on Friday 13th, with some notable performances from our members: James and Allison Douglas came 12th Overall and won the last race. Alex Jardine and Iona Deacon came 29th overall, but now need a new hull having had a to do with a Belgian sailor (no, not me!!). Lee Matthews and Warren Bidwell finished 31st, with a best of 15th in the first windy race. Many congratulations to them. As for my performance, it can better be compared to my school report when I was 12: Oh mon Dieu, si décevant !!!!! In my defence, our team hit a snag on day 4 of the competition, when 10 rivets holding the track / tarpaulin in place, totally snapped, leaving the two hulls in danger of going their separate ways! We limped through the finish line, but failed to start the next two races that day allowing for necessary repairs = 2 DNC. Then on day 5 it all went catastrophically pear shaped.. I decided to be more aggressive on the start line, but misjudged my approach to the pin end, hitting the pin end RIB with some intent!! I put my best smile on and wished the occupants a good afternoon, but despite having exonerated our penalty we were still awarded an OCS and moreover an ASP for the next race. I had never heard of an ASP and initially thought it was an Award for Special People having been so nice to those in the RIB, but it turned out to be an Alternative Starting Penalty for reasons best known to the organisers. So we ended up 80th out of 89 participants and the only reason I beat 3 of them is because they never went in the water in the first place. As my teachers often told my parents Could / Should do a lot better. My thanks to my long suffering crew Steve Jardine, but not all was negative: > My crews vocabulary is now enriched with new and vitally important expressions. > We made loads of friends, not least of which the French, who gave me the name of a Dart 18 participant, whose son runs a vineyard in the Cote Du Rhône region. Imagine that!! It just so happens that our return route is, by pure coincidence, going right past Crozes Hermitage in Chapuitier, and so that is where I am heading next. I hope to see many of you next weekend when I am back home. Meanwhile, Santé. Le Waffleur. |
A huge Family Brown Thank You! I cannot thank everyone enough for all your wonderful, tender and caring messages following Dave's sad death last week. It was not a complete surprise having been in hospital for eight weeks, but his passing still shocked us all. Mark, Paul, Kyle and Nathan were all able to say their final goodbyes and Hilary, Kathryn and I were with him until the end, so he was surrounded by the family he adored so much. According to my little grandson Henry, he is now helping polish the moon and light the stars! His funeral is on Monday the 7th October at 12 noon at the Middle Chapel, Landican and afterwards at WKSC. If you wish to come you would be very welcome. Thank you once again. Helen Brown x |

Price Platter - Last Sunday (15th September) Last Sunday, West Kirby saw four teams compete for the Price Platter. The event held in falcons kindly provided by their owners. Each team sailing against each other twice before the final. The teams: Hilbres, Peter Bramley, Phil Oliver and Ian Clarke. The Falcons, Jonathan and Terri Atkinson with Sophie and Chris Gatenby. The Handicap Team of John Greenwood, Phil Smith and Eve Bromilow, The Youth Team, Holly Wright, Clare Wright and Tim. After the initial round robin series each team had had six races. Some really close racing saw team Holly and John qualify for the final. The final was a best of three format, the first race had an aggressive start where both teams neutralised each other perhaps Holly just edged. The first beat saw John being close covered as Holly wouldn't let him off the hook. Holly rounded the windward mark two boat lengths ahead but now it was the turn of the following boat to have the wind. Closing fast John managed to get an overlap, however Holly managed to gybe onto starboard on the lay line for the pin end. Whilst John managed to get a leeward overlap, it was within the three boat zone and therefore Holly had the right to room at the finish buoy. John luffed the windward boat but was penalised for luffing a boat that was entitled to room. Holly was one up. The second race saw John win the start but had accrued a penalty, with a good lead near the windward buoy John took his penalty which brought Holly back into the race, close enough to sit right on John's wind, establishing an overlap to windward, John gybed out of the covered position allowing Holly to pass to leeward, a position Holly held to the finish. Exiting stuff, when watched as opposed to being described by me. All the teams had some great races, despite the rain, all teams had fun and would do it all again. The winning team of Holly, Clare and Tim were presented with the Price Platter and a Crystal carafe and Glass which were kindly presented to the event by The Waverley. We will be running more match racing days in the winter. All are welcome to compete... a team needs three people of all sizes and ages. Falcons are ideal for this event.
