A View From The Bridge
Well, the storms came and went, pretty much as forecast.
Sadly, I have to report that T'ark lost her moorings and was smashed up on the rock armour just south of Caldy Golf Club. Many thanks to our Captain and his band of merry volunteers who braved the low tide to recover the debris from the beach. No one can ever accuse us of littering!
Thanks also to the team today, including Bob, Mally and others, who cut up the remains and loaded them into a skip.
Another team went out to inspect the old moorings and check on Arvor. It was fortunate they did, as the strop had not been moused in place and had jumped clear of the bow fairlead. Would she have survived the next tide? Who knows? Thankfully, at the time of writing, she remains safe and secure.
A special thank you goes to Alan Davison who, despite his ever-busy schedule helping the Club, somehow continues to find even more time to volunteer for our benefit. He has done an absolutely fantastic job repairing the Wilson Room binoculars. They were badly damaged when they fell from their mount and, quite honestly, you can no longer see where the damage was. He has saved the Club a considerable sum of money. He has also fitted them to a new mounting, which looks excellent.
The story behind those binoculars is an interesting one. They are one of two sets gifted to the Club by Royal Mersey in the 1950s, if memory serves, to mark the opening of the new clubhouse. Apparently they were "borrowed" from a German cruiser at the end of the Second World War, and if you take a close look, you can still see all the markings are in German. Unfortunately, the second set was stolen during a break-in at the old office in the 1990s.
The remaining binoculars have always occupied their position at the top of the stairs, providing an excellent view across much of our bailiwick.
Whilst the weather looks reasonably settled for the coming week, please continue to keep an eye on both your own boats and those of your fellow members. Check that tie-downs are secure and don't be shy with the round turns and half hitches. Don't forget that the round turn does most of the work, taking the strain off the knot and helping to prevent it from either jamming or working loose.
Be cautious about bailing out plastic boats after heavy rain. The weight of the water can actually help keep them in place during bad weather. That said, too much water can place significant strain on the hull while it sits on a trailer. If you're unsure, ask for advice.
See you at the Halloween Party!
Keep warm, and may your boots stay dry!

As with previous series this will consist of 5 General Knowledge / Trivia rounds, a specialist round and a news round.
Each round has ten questions except the specialist one which varies week to week with Anagrams, Dingbats, Riddles and other brain teasers.
Once again Jenny Wilkinson is our host who puts in many hours to produce these challenging but fun evenings.
There are a hard core of quizzers but we would welcome any other members and friends interested in coming along either individually or as a team.
Finally to round out the evening we have a game of cards where, if your luck is in you have a opportunity to go home with up to a hundred pounds.
Come along, support your Club and have a pleasant couple of hours.
See you there!
