COMMODORES CUP 2026 AT LIVERPOOL YACHT CLUB 26 September 2026
On Saturday, President Peter Bramley and I, standing in for our Commodore, took part in the annual Commodores Cup at Liverpool Yacht Club.
The Commodores Cup is an annual invitation for our Kindred Clubs to join members of Liverpool Yacht Club for a race on the Mersey, sailing their racing and cruiser-racers.
Each visiting Club is randomly allocated a boat, with the guests taking responsibility for helming and trimming the mainsail, while the owner and regular crew remain on board to keep an eye on their guest sailors!
Following an early start and breakfast served at 7.30am, Peter and I were fortunate to draw Lauras beautiful and previously successful Beneteau First 34.7, crewed by Findley and Joe.
Unfortunately, a last-minute change of sails meant that we started the race at the back of the fleet. However, after an hour of racing, we had worked our way through the fleet to finish third over the line. Sadly, once the handicap was applied, combined with some fairly enthusiastic ham-fisted sailing by yours truly, we eventually finished seventh!
It was a fantastic experience to sail and race a proper race-prepared boat, and many thanks to Laura for trusting us with her pride and joy.
Afterwards, we enjoyed some excellent hospitality and the opportunity to socialise with our fellow Kindred Clubs. These occasions are an important part of what makes the relationship between our clubs so worthwhile, and it was great to spend time with sailors from across the region.
Despite our own shortcomings on the day, it was particularly pleasing to see two fellow WKSC members, David Taylor and Tom Price, representing Royal Dee Yacht Club and taking first prize to be awarded the magnificent Commodores Cup.
Well done, David and Tom although Im sure they'll be keeping rather quiet about the fact that two West Kirby sailors had to represent another club to win it!
Heres to next year when well hopefully be back, wiser, faster and perhaps a little less ham-fisted!

The Autumn Quiz Series starts on Wednesday 14th October at 2000hrs
As with previous series this will consist of 5 General Knowledge / Trivia rounds, a specialist round and a news round.
Each round has ten questions except the specialist one which varies week to week with Anagrams, Dingbats, Riddles and other brain teasers.
Once again Jenny Wilkinson is our host who puts in many hours to produce these challenging but fun evenings.
There are a hard core of quizzers but we would welcome any other members and friends interested in coming along either individually or as a team.
Finally to round out the evening we have a game of cards where, if your luck is in you have a opportunity to go home with up to a hundred pounds.
Come along, support your Club and have a pleasant couple of hours.

RADIO ACTIVE news from the radio sailing group
We are pleased to report that one of our members won the prestigious Commodores Cup last Saturday. David Taylor (also Royal Dee ) has been sharpening his skills on Thursdays with the group.
Well done!
It is possible that the return match will be in DF 95s.
